Private Road Repair Using SealBoss 6060 QuickFix

On The Job

Private Road Repair | SealBoss 6060 QuickFix Fast Setting Polyurethane

SealBoss Technical Rep On the Road

Roads can crack and settle over time from a multitude of environmental factors.

If your street is a private road, the city is not responsible for the repair or maintenance and that responsibility falls on the residents of that private development.

Having a quick and efficient way to do these repairs when they come up is key, while still being able to respect the resident’s privacy with minimal disruptions.

SealBoss 6060 Spall & Crack Repair QuickFix is a self-leveling repair material to which sand can be added for strength, anti skid properties and aesthetics.

SeaBoss 6060 takes only about five minutes to fully cure at ambient room temperature. The product cures in temperatures down to -20 degrees Fahrenheit. Lower temperatures will increase cure times.

To prep surface cracks for the repair a V-notch blade should be used to chase the cracks and then thoroughly cleaned out of small rocks and any other debris and organic matter. For best results the cracks must be dry — if moisture is present a propane torch may be used to dry the area.

Once crack is prepped and the material is conditioned, you can begin applying SealBoss 6060 QuickFix to the crack. After about a minute you can then broadcast sand into the curing material.

Doing this allows for a non-slip surface as well as a salt and pepper finish to help blend the repair.

SealBoss 6060 QuickFix is available in 22oz cartridges (see pictures below) as well as in bulk in pails, drums and totes.  The SealBoss Road Repair System is shown here to repair concrete road cracks.

The SealBoss JointMaster 2 G3i Joint Fill Pump (see picture below in the background) is the recommended equipment for larger applications and potholes and repairs of blacktop / asphalt / bitumen finished roads.

How to Lift Concrete Slabs with Polyurethane Foam | Concrete Raising / Foam Jacking

How to Lift Concrete Slabs
with Polyurethane Foam
Concrete Raising / Foam Jacking

Poly Jacking and Foam Jacking – Lifting Concrete Slabs with Plural Component Foam by SealBoss

Introduction

The innovative technique of Poly Jacking, also known as Foam Jacking, is rapidly gaining recognition.

This method, utilizing plural component structural polyurethane foams, offers a clean and quick solution for stabilizing and lifting sunken concrete slabs. This overview explains some nuances of this process, exploring its phases, methodologies, and the expertise SealBoss brings to the table.

What is Poly Jacking / Foam Jacking?

Poly Jacking, or Foam Jacking, is a specialized process designed to repair sunken and unstable concrete slabs. The technique involves injecting SealBoss 1640 Structural Strength Slab Lifting, Polyjacking, and Void Filling Foam beneath the concrete. This is achieved by drilling small holes and pumping the expansive foam under the slab, providing support and elevation.

The Inspection Phase

Evaluating the Site

Before commencing the Poly Jacking process, a thorough inspection of the slab lifting area is essential. This includes:

  • Soil Condition Assessment:
Understanding soil conditions is vital, as discussed in our article,  What Is Dynamic Cone Penetration Testing | SealBoss Deep-Soil-Lift

  • Structural Damage Analysis:
Identifying any structural damages to the concrete and the extent of support loss due to voids or cavities beneath is crucial

  • Measurement of Sunken Slabs:
Structural damages to the concrete slab and loss in support (voids/cavities) under the structure need to be determined. The actual loss in height of the sunken slabs of concrete have to be measured.

These factors collectively aid in predicting the success of the repair and determining the necessary materials and time.

The Repair Phase

Strategy and Execution

Prior to lifting a sunken piece of concrete slab the method of approach has to be determined to achieve the desired result.

The points of initial and subsequent injection and sequence of injection is crucial to lift a slab evenly and with the least stress to the concrete as possible, as concrete sections may crack. Even distribution of pressure during the process is key to lift a slab successfully.

When SealBoss polyjacking grout is first injected through drill hole in the slab it will initially fill any voids and cavities under the structure.

Once the voids are filled and the foam grout has gained strength, it will start to build pressure and compact the soil under the slab to the point where the soil is dense enough to support the foam pressure necessary for the slab to lift. Soil of lower density will compact more under pressure and may require more foam grout during the process.

As the pressure builds and the lifting process begins, the vertical movement of the slab has to be monitored closely. The points of injection may need to be alternated to keep forces and stresses to the slab as low as possible and to prevent cracks in the concrete. Even and steady lifting is the key to success.

During the lifting process the soil will continue to compact until reaching sufficient density to raise the slab to the desired elevation and level with the surrounding substrate.

Execution Steps Overview

  • Determining the Approach:
Before lifting the sunken slab, an appropriate method must be planned to ensure the desired outcome

  • Injection Point and Sequence:
The choice of initial and subsequent injection points and their sequence is critical to evenly lift the slab and minimize stress and potential cracking

  • Void Filling and Strength Building:
Initially, SealBoss polyjacking grout fills voids and cavities, gaining strength to build pressure for lifting

  • Soil Compaction and Slab Elevation:
The foam grout compacts the underlying soil, enhancing its density to support the lifting process

  • Monitoring and Adjusting:
Continuous monitoring and adjusting injection points are essential to ensure even lifting and prevent concrete cracking

  • Achieving Desired Elevation:
The process continues until the slab is raised to the desired level, aligning with the surrounding surface

Wet Basement Leak Sealing with Injection System

Do You have Water Leaks in Your Basement?

Prevent mold development and other problems from occurring by using the SealBoss polyurethane foam injection system to seal cracks and joints in your basement walls and foundation.

A damp and leaky basement not only emits an unpleasant odor but also threatens to reduce the value and livability of your home. Moisture in the basement creates an ideal environment for mold growth and can contribute to the deterioration of foundations, walls, and floors.

Neglecting to seal cracks and joints can have severe consequences as it enables water to penetrate the structure, propelled by both hydrostatic pressure and capillary action. Capillary action is the phenomenon of water being pulled up through a substrate by cohesive and adhesive forces. Water that rises through capillary action also transports minerals and salts, which can contribute to greater degradation of the structure. It’s crucial to address and seal any cracks and joints in order to prevent these harmful effects from taking hold.

The SealBoss polyurethane foam injection system is an effective and reliable solution to repair water leaks in basements.

One of the main advantages of using the SealBoss system is its ability to penetrate and fill even the smallest cracks and voids in the concrete, effectively sealing off any potential water intrusion points.

The SealBoss system is a non-invasive solution, meaning that it does not require any major excavation or demolition work. This makes it a cost-effective and time-efficient solution, with minimal disruption to the homeowner’s daily routine.

Furthermore, the SealBoss wet basement solutions system provides a permanent solution to the problem, unlike temporary solutions such as surface sealants and waterproofing paints. The foam is resistant to water, mold, and mildew, providing long-lasting protection against future water leaks and moisture-related problems.

Overall, the SealBoss polyurethane foam injection system is an effective, non-invasive, and long-lasting solution to repair water leaks in basements, providing homeowners with peace of mind and protection against potential water damage.

Sealing Basement Leaks with Polyurethane Foam Injection System

Scope

A SealBoss-certified contractor based in St. Louis was requested to repair actively leaking basement cracks in a residential property during heavy rainfall.

Wet Basement Solution – Detail

Based on a comprehensive inspection and assessment of the jobsite and considering the width of the crack, it was concluded that drilling a hole directly over the crack at a 90 degree angle and all the way through the wall would be necessary.

This method was considered the most effective way to permanently seal the crack. It involved a combination of crack injection and curtain injection procedures. The injection process allowed for the product to flow from the dirt side of the structure, which is known as the positive side, back through the crack to the inside of the structure, while sealing the crack completely.

The injection on the blind side resulted in a buildup of the hydrophobic resin, creating a curtain on the positive side of the wall. The injection process created a barrier, which subsequently caused the pressure buildup to push the resin back into the crack itself. This sealing process effectively sealed the crack and any fissures present in the process.

Materials and Tools Used

The preferred products for the job were SealBoss 1510 and SealBoss 15X Accelerator. To speed up the reaction, the SealBoss 15X accelerator/catalyst was incorporated into the resin at a volume ratio of 10%.

Injection packers were set along the crack, roughly twelve inches apart.

The injection process utilized the P2002 compact high pressure injection pump along with Evolution 13-100AL ½” packers to inject the polyurethane foam resin.

A quantity of approximately one gallon of material was utilized for each six lineal feet of the crack.

Manhole Injection Training

Manhole Injection Training

Manhole Repair - Leak Sealing Injection

Manhole Leak Repair On-Site Training

Rehabilitation and Leak Mitigation:
Training with Polyurethane Injection Grout System – SEALBOSS 1510 WATERSTOP FOAM

The polyurethane injection technique provides an effective and durable solution for sealing leaks in manholes. This method employs a chemical grout that, when injected into cracks or joints, expands upon contact with water, forming a flexible yet sturdy seal, ensuring a long-lasting and water-resistant barrier, and significantly enhancing the integrity and lifespan of manhole structures.

A technical representative from SealBoss was engaged in providing an extensive consultation and training session at a project site, with a primary focus on addressing and repairing active leaks in masonry block manholes.

These manholes, situated adjacent to a swiftly flowing creek, were experiencing significant failures and active leakage due to compromised cementitious grout between the masonry blocks. A prior remedial attempt by the contractor, involving a cartridge product, failed to address the leakage problem.

As an effective remedy, SealBoss recommended the utilization of a high-pressure polyurethane water stop foam injection approach. This solution involved the SealBoss P2002 single-component injection pump and the SealBoss 1510 Water Stop Foam, administered through an array of SealBoss AL 13-100 (½”) high-pressure packers. Additionally, SealBoss Seal Oakum was provided to supplement the treatment.

Our SealBoss technical representative was on-site for a two-day period, imparting crucial manhole injection training and support to the contractor regarding the use of the injection system. The primary objective was to ensure the contractor’s crew gained both confidence and proficiency in the system’s application.

Training was provided on the operation of the pumps, setting of the packers, and the overall injection procedure, including post-application cleanup.

For areas with larger cracks or excessively active leaks with high-volume water flow, the contractor crew received instructions on the application of catalyzed resin-soaked SealBoss Seal Oakum. This method was employed to rapidly establish a barrier, curtailing active water flow and facilitating the retention of the injected foam resin within the crack during its expansion phase.

The Oakum Seal Method utilizes Seal Oakum, a dry, oil-free fiber that absorbs SealBoss chemical grouts. When placed in the structure, the water-reactive resin expands, forming a dense, flexible seal that prevents leaks during injection and curing. It also serves as a physical barrier against water migration in larger cracks and joints.

Through the duration of the training, all leaks were successfully sealed, effectively terminating water ingress into the manhole.

For inquiries regarding manhole injection training and repair applications or other injection-related applications, we invite you to contact our skilled team of SealBoss representatives. We offer scheduling for on-site consultations and comprehensive injection systems training, assuring optimal results for your projects.

How to Seal Leaks | Repair Cracks in Shotcrete

How to seal leaks and repair cracks in Shotcrete Sealboss 1510

How to Seal Leaks and Repair Cracks in Shotcrete:

Shotcrete is a versatile and durable material widely used in construction for creating complex structures, including decorative elements in zoos and theme parks.

However, like any other material, it is prone to developing cracks and leaks over time. Addressing these issues promptly is crucial to maintain the integrity and appearance of the structures. This article outlines a practical example of how the SealBoss Water Stop System was effectively used to repair a decorative shotcrete structure at the Omaha Zoo.

sealboss 1510 shotcrete crack injection

The Challenge: Leaks and Cracks in Decorative Shotcrete

The Omaha Zoo faced a significant challenge when a decorative shotcrete structure, an integral part of the zoo’s aesthetic appeal, began showing signs of deterioration.

Cracks and leaks had developed, primarily due to an irrigation system installed above the structure. Water seepage through these fissures threatened the durability and appearance of the faux rock face, necessitating an urgent and effective repair solution.

The Solution: SealBoss 1510 Foam and P2002 Polyurethane Pump

To address this issue, a technical representative from SealBoss was called upon. The solution proposed involved the use of the SealBoss Water Stop System, specifically the 1510 Water Stop / Leak Seal Foam and the compact P2002 Injection Pump, along with SealBoss Evolution AL Packers (1/2″, 5/8 BH/Zerk).

The objective was clear: to seal the leaks and repair the cracks effectively without compromising the structure’s aesthetic value. The SealBoss system was chosen for its proven efficiency in such scenarios.

The Process: Hydro Active Foam Injection Technique

The repair process began with a thorough assessment of the structure to identify all visible voids and cracks. The SealBoss team then employed the hydro active foam injection technique, using the P2002 drill injection machine along with 1/2 AL & 5/8 injection packers.

SealBoss 1510 was injected into the cracks until visible penetration was observed on the face of these cracks. This process required multiple injections at various points to ensure that the foam traveled deep into the cracks, forming a dense, closed-cell compression seal upon expansion. One of the remarkable observations during the process was the expanding foam pushing out from the cracks, indicating its excellent travel and coverage within the network of fissures.

The Outcome: A Leak-Free, Restored Structure

Following the injection process, the structure underwent a rigorous inspection to ensure that all leaks were sealed. The SealBoss system proved its efficacy, as the structure passed the inspection with no signs of leakage. The aesthetic integrity of the structure was maintained, with minimal visible impact from the repair process.

Training and Support

SealBoss offers in-person and video training for those interested in learning more about their products and techniques. This training is invaluable for professionals looking to enhance their skills in leak sealing and crack repair in shotcrete structures. Additionally, SealBoss provides access to regional technical representatives who can offer insights into the full range of system solutions and offerings.

Conclusion

The successful repair of the decorative shotcrete structure at the Omaha Zoo is a testament to the effectiveness of the SealBoss Water Stop System. This case study highlights the importance of choosing the right materials and techniques for repairing shotcrete structures. With the right approach, it is possible to extend the life of these structures while maintaining their aesthetic and structural integrity.

For those facing similar challenges, consulting with a SealBoss technical representative can provide tailored solutions to effectively address leaks and cracks in shotcrete.

High Strength Two Component PUR

Filling Under Slab Voids

Void filling injection with SealBoss 1640 Fill & Lift Foam using Versatile Two Component Injection Pump SLP 2C

Description:

The customer’s need was to have voids under a triangular section of concrete in a larger home filled with SealBoss 1640 two component high strength (approx. 4 pounds per cubic foot weight) via using the SealBoss SLP2C — moniker “suitcase pump” — versatile dual component pneumatic injection pump.

The product was to be injected through high volume SealBoss Plastic Button Head Packers. The setting of the ports was rather straight forward with 2’ O.C. spacing in the field of the slab area to be injected under and a 1’ off the wall edge spacing around the area.

Recap:

Inherent to any project in which you cannot see under the substrate to gauge what the material is doing is the challenge of how much product should be used.

Initially the void was thought to be roughly 3” in height under that slab but, after probing once the drill holes were established for the packer placement, it was discovered that the void’s depth ranged from 3” to 8” in height.

Void filling without lifting

What the team did not want to do is raise the slab at all but rather fill the void as mentioned earlier. Therefore a less aggressive expansive reaction of the SealBoss 1640 structural foam was required.

One of the factors that plays into this desired result is the material’s temperature. The warmer the material is when being injected under the slab, the faster it will react. This is generally a basic rule of reaction when dealing with chemical compounds. The team initially injected the material without any preheating and saw that while it reacted, it did so slower than if it were heated. (Slab lifting / Polyjacking  procedures call for product component temperatures above 100° F / 40° C ) .

On a second pass to ensure the void was filled completely the team heated the material slightly and was able to add to the first pass to complete the filling of the void.

Seal Leaks with Oakum

Seal Leaks with Oakum

What is Oakum Soakum?

For Best Results, Soak the Oakum.
 – Oakum Soakum –

sealboss-seal-oakum-rope

The Benefits of using the Oakum Seal Method

Seal Oakum is an untreated, strong, dry and oil free jute based fiber capable of absorbing copious amounts of SealBoss chemical grouts. Resin impregnated Seal Oakum reacts with water and expands to form a dense and flexible seal. It offers major benefits for many leak sealing jobs by keeping injection resin in place and prevent it from escaping and leaking during the injection process and prior to cure. With soaked oakum you can create a physical barrier to prevent active water infiltration in larger openings, irregular cracks and joints.

Oakum is mainly used as a carrier medium for hydro active foam resins for use in wide openings to seal leaks. It is used to slow down massive water flow to permit the injection foam to cure. For this application Seal Oakum is soaked in SealBoss foam grout leak-seal resin and the saturated product packed into actively leaking cracks and joints as a compression seal. ‘Oakum Soakum’ is an industry known term for the technique. Prior to use inspect area for loose concrete and remove any contamination to prepare for insertion of the fiber into the desired location.

Can I use un-soaked, dry Seal Oakum?

Seal Oakum also works well dry when driven into cracks as a temporary seal to allow injected resin time to cure without washing out.

Seal Oakum is cut to length and sold in ready-to-use sets

How to and Where to use Seal Oakum

  • For Use With SealBoss Hydro Active PU Water Stop Foam Injection Grouts – Oakum Soakum Technique
  • Create Joint Gaskets or Use in Combination with Gaskets in Sewer & Storm Drain Lines, Ducts
  • Wastewater Treatment Plants
  • Reservoirs & Water Tanks
  • Service Manholes
  • Tunnels & Underground Cable Trenches
  • Pipe Penetrations,
  • SealBoss Seal Pipe Kit

How to Seal Gushing Leaks and Wide Cracks with Seal Oakum

  • Use gloves and protective gear during the oakum soakum application process
  • It is recommended to drill packer holes and set packers prior to oakum use.
  • One, or several relief holes may divert water pressure during the oakum placement
  • Clean the surfaces to which the oakum will be applied
  • Place oakum in a container and saturate with SealBoss Water Stop Foam
  • Remove excess resin from the oakum
  • For minor leaks or dry cracks or joints dip the resin soaked oakum into a pail of water to begin the reaction process and expansion
  • Pack oakum into the joint or crack with a large screwdriver or any tool suitable for the task
  • In cases of severe water pressure you may want to use a wooden board or other suitable product to mechanically support the applied oakum from being pushed out
  • Injection should be performed through preinstalled packers. If advised, a SealBoss Injection Needle may be used to inject grout directly through the oakum.

Sealing Pipe Penetrations with Seal Oakum

To seal pipe penetrations, resin saturated oakum can be sprayed with water or dropped into a pail of water to start the activation process.  The reactive oakum is now packed into joints and around leaky pipe penetrations where it creates a watertight seal between the outside of the pipe and the wall of the structure.

Used dry, oakum fibers can be packed into wider cracks and joints to retain injected SealBoss polyurethane resin.

Installation Guidelines

Submerge SealBoss 1500 Seal Oakum into activated foam resin. When removing from container, wipe off excess material. If necessary, wet joints or voids with water to prime surface for saturated SealBoss® 1500 Seal Oakum.

To seal minor leaks, dip saturated SealBoss Seal Oakum into water to start reaction.

Place saturated SealBoss Seal Oakum in the joint or void. You may also spray saturated oakum surface with water to speed up the cure process. Cut excess product from substrate surface after cure.
