SwellTape System Principle
When in contact with water, SwellTape & SwellCaulk sealants develop an expansive swelling pressure.
The pressure between the expanding product and the surrounding concrete structure prevents the penetration of water through the joint and provides a durable waterproofing solution.
Product Description
SealBoss SwellTape is a manufactured hydrophilic waterstop strip that swells on contact with water thereby creating a compression seal. The product is formulated for sealing construction joints, pipe penetrations and other concrete joints. SwellTape is applied in the center of the existing cured concrete surface prior to the new pour. SealBoss Products are designed for professional use.
Installation Guidelines
SwellTape is suitable for reinforced joints in concrete structures with a minimal strength of 2175 psi. The product should be applied to a dust-free concrete surface.
Due to the swelling pressure created during expansion, SealBoss ® SwellTape must be installed at a minimum of 50 mm (2″) from each side of the joint edge.
Product attachment:
- SealBoss Swell Tape can be embedded in freshly applied SealBoss Swell Caulk which serves as adhesive (see video).
The use of SealBoss SwellCaulk will further assist in leveling uneven, porous concrete surfaces thereby enhancing the waterproofing properties of the system. Conditions for this method should be dry. For detailed information on SealBoss SwellCaulk application requirements, please refer to SealBoss SwellCaulk data sheet. - SealBoss SwellTape can be nailed to the concrete surface. Shoot suitable concrete nails by spacing them 15 cm (6″) apart using a high grade nail gun.
Important: For overlap, crossings and terminations cut SwellTape in a 45° angle and connect without a visible gap.
Applications around plastic pipe penetrations are limited in diameter to DN 50 (2″) cold water and DN 25 (1″) for hot water. The high potential swelling pressure of SwellTape may result in pipe deformation. Larger diameters can be achieved with strong metal and cast iron pipes.
